WASHINGTON (Reuters)-U.S. new claims for unemployment benefits rose last week to surprising their highest level since January in a drawing an expected recovery of the labour markets can last, a Government report showed on Thursday.
Initial claims for State unemployment benefits jumped a seasonally adjusted 25,000 to 429,000, a light upwardly revised 404,000 the previous week, said the Ministry of labour. Economists surveyed by Reuters were expecting claims to slip to 392,000 of the previously reported 403,000.
Jobless claims under 400,000 are associated with solid job growth.
The four week moving average, a better measure of underlying trends of 408,500, climbed to 399,250 in the preceding week. It was the highest for the average four weeks since February.
The number of people still receiving benefits under the regular State programs after a first week of the aid a more-than-expected 68000 in the week tumbled last April 16 to 3.64 million, the lowest level since September 2008. Analysts expect a further drop in claims for 3,68 million.
